| Rishra
is a city and a municipality in Hooghly district in West Bengal.
It is a town, which is surrounded by the river Hooghly in the
east. The town is divided into two parts, which are East Rishra
and West Rishra. Rishra station is situated in the middle of
the town.
The attractions of Rishra are Jagaddharti Puja, which is
celebrated between the months of Oct-Nov. There is also an
annual Rishra Fair, which held every year on the month of
January with a huge fanfare. Durga Puja, Deepawali, Holi,
Chhat puja and Eid are major fesivals celebrated with great
enthusiasm in Rishra. Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gaudiya
Math is a religious center, which is also situated in Rishra.
Many cultural and social organizations are also there, such
as Jagran, Hanuman Bhakt mandal, Maheshwari Bhawan,Mahila
Mandal,Rishra Sevak Sangh, Marwadi Yuva Manch, Khatu Shyam
Mandal,Rishra Jagaran Mandal, who engaged themselves in social
activities.Population of Rishra is a mixture of mostly Bengalis,
Biharis and Marwaris. Many people of Rishra are the members
of RSS. They involve themselves in solving the problems of
people.
Rishra has many good schools like, Mahesh Sri Ramkrishna
Ashram, Vani Bharati,Vivekananda English Academy,Rishra Vidhyapith
Hindi High school which are considered as some of the best
schools of Hooghly district. Other majors schools are J.N.LORATO,
Swatantra Vidyalaya, Stepping Stone School, St. Thomas Academy,St.Johns,
St.Marry's, KidZee, Rishra Girls High School, Pyari mohan
Das, Rishra High School, Sun Shine and there is only one Urdu
medium high school as Rishra Anjuman High School etc. There
is also a college named Bidhan Chandra College.
Rishra is also known for an industrial area which consisit
of some factories like Jayashree Textiles, ICI, Hindustan
Glass, Kusum Oil Products Ltd.,Berger Paints, PMC Rubber chemicals,Aditya
Birla Nuvo Limited, Shaw Wallace, Hindustan Glass, Phosphate
Fertilisers, Laxmi Cotton Mills,Bhushan Steels,Green Water
Technologies Pvt.Ltd, R.S.ISPAT,Hastings Jute Mills,Wellington
Jute Mill, Fort William Industries Etc. It is the home of
first Jute mill in India under the British rule. This shows
that Rishra is a very economically developed town.
